EcoReFibre - Wood fiberboard recycling

We develop new ideas for the recycling of wood fiberboards

Fiberboards made of wood, such as MDF, HDF and insulation boards, are an important material for furniture production or the construction industry. Every year, however, large quantities of these wood fiberboards are disposed of without an economically viable solution for recycling. At the moment, fresh wood fibers are mainly used for production, while fiberboard is largely incinerated after a single use.

Due to the increasing scarcity of the natural raw material wood, DIEFFENBACHER and 19 partner organizations from seven countries have joined forces in the EU-funded EcoReFibre research project to develop new solutions for the recycling of wood fiberboards. The joint project objective is to ensure the security of raw material supplies in Europe. This is to be achieved by extending the product life cycle and optimizing it with the help of the circular economy in conjunction with innovative, digitally supported technologies.

They can be used to sort fiberboard from waste wood, recover the fibers for production and convert them into economical and sustainable products.

Project scope

Funded by the European Union as part of the European Framework Program for Research and Innovation “Horizon Europe”
The project aims to recycle wood fibers at the end of their life cycle and use them to produce new fiberboards, conserving fresh wood resources
The project partners want to develop solutions that replace up to 25% of the fresh wood fibers used to produce wood fiberboards with recycled secondary fibers
Five pilot projects will also explore how recycled wood fibers can be used to produce new end products such as insulation materials and bio-composites
The project was launched in May 2022 and is scheduled to end in May 2026

Potential areas of application

In contrast to chipboard production, where substituting fresh wood with waste wood is already state of the art, fresh wood is still used almost exclusively to produce wood fiberboards. These materials can be made from recycled fibers:

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF)
Insulation boards
High-density fiberboard (HDF)
Bio-composites
